Crushed But Not Abandoned: Healing From Abuse and Shame

"Psalm 34:18 / Isaiah 61:3"

Some wounds are not just painful โ€” they are crushing. Abuse. Shame poured onto you by someone who should have protected you. Ill-treatment that told you, again and again, that you were worthless, dirty, or deserving of what happened. "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." (Psalm 34:18). If your spirit feels crushed tonight, God has not turned away from you. He is closest exactly here, in the depths. The Weight You Were Never Meant to Carry What was done to you was not your fault. Shame lies โ€” it whispers that you caused it, that you deserved it, that you are what happened to you. You are not. The abuse belongs to the one who caused it. The shame does not belong to you at all, and it never did. What Carrying This Pain Quietly Does to You Here is the hard truth: the pain and guilt you carry do not punish the person who hurt you. They only continue to wound you. Buried pain hardens into a numbness that keeps you from feeling loved even when love is offered. Unspoken shame isolates you, convincing you to hide the very parts of yourself that most need light and compassion. Guilt that was never yours to carry quietly steals your peace, your sleep, your ability to trust โ€” even to trust God. The bitter fruit of unhealed pain grows inward: anxiety, self-punishment, broken relationships, a heart that stays guarded long after the danger has passed. None of this touches the one who hurt you. It only deepens your own wound. God's Nearness in the Depths "To bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair." (Isaiah 61:3). God does not ask you to minimize what happened to you. He comes to bind up the brokenhearted, to sit with you in the ashes, and to slowly โ€” patiently โ€” exchange them for something beautiful. Healing does not erase the memory, but it can loosen its grip. You were crushed, but you were not, and are not, abandoned. Personal Reflection What shame have you been carrying that was never yours to carry? What would it feel like to set it down at God's feet tonight โ€” even just for this moment? A Prayer for Myself Lord, You see what was done to me, and You see the shame I have carried because of it. I did not deserve this. Today, I choose to lay this weight at Your feet โ€” the guilt that was never mine, the shame that lied to me, the pain I have carried alone for too long. Come near to me now, in this crushed place, and hold what I cannot hold anymore. Begin to heal what was broken. Give me beauty in place of these ashes, and teach me, slowly, to trust again. I am not what happened to me. I am Yours. Amen. You were crushed, but you were never abandoned โ€” and the God who is close to the brokenhearted is near you even now.
